OTOY to Turn Smartphones into Gaming OTOY to Turn Smartphones into Gaming Devices
OTOY, the ready-to-come server-side rendering service, which comes as a powerful solution that can stream complex 3D games to a personal computer via any browser will soon become available on any browser-enabled device, meaning that smartphone users will also be able to enjoy its capabilities. According to the company, any user with an Internet connection would be able to enjoy games like Crysis and GTA 4 directly from the browser on their devices, all streamed in HD quality.
There is also a video that shows how the solution can deliver Crysis directly on a mobile device. While the game is controlled via an Xbox gamepad connected wirelessly, the phone is a Samsung Omnia. According to Tech Crunch, the technology can be enjoyed on handsets that are not high-end as well, and does not require any installs. OTOY Chief Strategy Officer Mark Tseng is also reported to have stated that the company is currently working on offering users the possibility to control the games through the handset's accelerometer, through the onscreen gamepad, or via external peripherals.
The technology is expected to offer support for Wi-Fi or 3G connections, and it seems that it should be available for almost any device, iPhone, Palm Pre or Android included, at least this is what the company has stated. Basically, the possibilities that the technology might offer seem to be infinite at the moment, and it should provide access to a wide range of attractive games. Unfortunately, the company hasn't unveiled any details on the pricing of its solution, though it seems that more details should be unveiled in the near future.
As many of you might already know, the latest mobile phones released on the market come with powerful resources, and they start being able to render 3D graphics on their own. Of course, the performance levels do not come near those offered by personal computers or modern consoles, yet the hardware is in a continuous advancement, and things might change in the future. For the time being, OTOY does not require hardware upgrades, as all the processing is done remotely, and, although there might be some connectivity problems with the mobile phones, gaming enthusiasts will still have a reason to rejoice.
